Calgary's newly expanded convention center, the BMO Centre, now boasts more than 1 million square feet of space. It is uniquely positioned on the grounds of the Calgary Stampede, where the largest outdoor rodeo in the world takes places every summer at a massive, renowned 10 day festival. To stay true to the western roots of the area, the BMO Centre thoughtfully designed the new space with unique touches that will surprise visitors.
Here are five examples of western design in Western Canada's largest convention center, that are likely to elicit a 'yahoo!' from conference and event attendees.
- Brand Room Doors: Local cowboy boot maker Alberta Boot Outfitters partnered with BMO Centre to add a custom stitch design on the leather Brand Room doors. The concept came from the idea of unfolding the shaft of a Cowboy boot.
- Champions Ballroom: The grand ballroom is named after the Calgary Stampede's champion bucking stock Grated Coconut, the six-time PRCA World Champion and six-time Canadian Champion. Grated Coconut performed best when traveling with his stablemate, the horse he shared a trailer with; together, they were undefeated. The naming of this ballroom signifies that a space like this is meant for celebrations, awards, and recognition—and we never do these things alone. We always celebrate together, which is why "Champion" ends with an "S."
- Medallions: Inlaid in the floor at primary entrances, these 8' designs resemble oversized coins or pennies. They are inspired by the Stampede commemorative coins minted from 1963 to 1986, each telling a unique piece of the Stampede story. The $1 trade tokens were originally issued as festival novelties, with most kept as souvenirs. The four versions featured in the BMO Centre today showcase imagery of iconic Stampede experiences: barrel racing, Indigenous dancing, the Stampede Showband, and a bucking horse.
- Blackened Steel & Copper: Interior features in BMO Centre made from blackened steel speaks to the Calgary Stampede's rich blacksmithing history and copper accents pull inspiration from pennies. Some of the copper and blackened steel elements include the Neon Cowboy art installation, the indoor fireplace (the largest indoor fireplace in Canada), floor medallions, Champions ballroom doors, Brand Rooms Big Four brand accents.
- Building Exterior: The exterior of the BMO Centre features a variety of materials, each rich with significance. The grey brick along the lower half of the building pays homage to Alberta's hardworking nature and grit. Glass and skylight elements throughout all levels provide guests with stunning views of Alberta's expansive blue sky (the sunniest major city in Canada).
